Baba Yara Sports Stadium is Ghana's second-largest football stadium and one of the country's most iconic sporting venues. Located in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, the stadium officially opened in 1959 as Kumasi Sports Stadium before being renamed in 2004 in honour of legendary Ghanaian footballer Baba Yara. Following major renovations completed in 2021, the stadium accommodates approximately 40,528 spectators. It serves as the home ground of Asante Kotoko SC and regularly hosts the Ghana national football team. The venue caters for football matches, athletics competitions, concerts, cultural events, national celebrations, and large public gatherings.
The stadium has hosted FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, CAF inter-club competitions, Ghana Premier League matches, and international football friendlies. Facilities include a natural grass football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track, floodlighting, VIP hospitality areas, media and broadcasting facilities, athlete changing rooms, electronic scoreboards, and spectator amenities for sporting and entertainment events.
Managed by the Ghana Sports Authority, Baba Yara Sports Stadium remains one of West Africa's leading football venues while supporting athletics, concerts, cultural programmes, community events, and national ceremonies. Its modern infrastructure, sporting heritage, and strategic location continue attracting athletes, supporters, organizers, and visitors throughout the year.
