Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Kilwa Road, Kurasini, Temeke, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Benjamin Mkapa Stadium is Tanzania's largest football stadium and one of East Africa's leading multi-purpose sports venues. Located in Miburani, within Dar es Salaam's Temeke District, it opened in 2007 next to the older Uhuru Stadium and was renamed in 2020 in honour of former President Benjamin Mkapa. With seating for 60,000 spectators, it serves as home ground for the Tanzania national football team, the Taifa Stars, alongside domestic giants Simba SC and Young Africans SC.
Football drives most of the action here, with the stadium hosting Tanzanian Premier League fixtures, World Cup qualifiers, Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and CAF club matches over the years. It has also staged CECAFA competitions and international friendlies, including a 2017 exhibition featuring Everton and Gor Mahia. The venue also accommodates athletics, concerts and national gatherings, and it's set to play a role in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
Built with a natural grass pitch and surrounding athletics track, the stadium offers VIP suites, media facilities, floodlighting and changing rooms. It's currently undergoing renovation work covering seating, lighting and pitch upgrades ahead of the 2027 tournament, reinforcing its place as one of Africa's premier sporting venues.
