National Sports Stadium, Gate 7, Samora Machel Avenue, Westlea, Harare, Zimbabwe
National Sports Stadium is Zimbabwe's largest sporting venue, sitting in Westlea just west of central Harare, not far from National Heroes' Acre. Opened in 1987, it has grown into the country's flagship stadium for major sport, holding around 60,000 spectators. It's the home ground of the Warriors, Zimbabwe's national football team, and the place fans turn to for World Cup qualifiers, Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and CAF club competitions. Beyond football, the stadium regularly hosts rugby union fixtures, athletics meets and large-scale concerts, making it one of the busiest multi-purpose venues in Southern Africa.
The stadium has seen real history unfold on its pitch. It hosted the 1998 CAF Champions League final between Dynamos Harare and ASEC Mimosas, plus the All-Africa Games in 1995. In 2019 it held former President Robert Mugabe's state funeral, drawing huge public attendance. The playing surface is GrassMaster turf, supported by athlete changing rooms, media facilities and floodlighting for evening fixtures. It has also hosted COSAFA Cup fixtures.
Following renovation work after 2006, the stadium remains central to Zimbabwean sport and culture today. Whether you're chasing football, rugby, athletics or live music, National Sports Stadium continues to anchor the country's biggest sporting occasions.
